In 1897, Mr. J.M. Higgins helped his three sons start new businesses in Hopkinsville; one a pharmacist, one a liquor wholesaler, and the smartest son, an insurance agent. From 1897 until the late 1960’s, Mr. Archie Higgins operated an insurance agency at 700 South Main Street in Hopkinsville, KY. The agency was located on the second floor where the Fletcher building now stands.

In 1959, a young insurance adjuster applied for a job. Despite being turned down several times, Billy Radford persisted and became an insurance agent. In 1969 Billy Radford and John Blane joined forces to purchase Higgins.

Over the next decade, Higgins continued to experience significant growth. During this time, they moved from 800 South Virginia Street and purchased the Jesse V. Keith Agency. In that time, Sterling Crawford became an insurance agent and partner before his untimely death in 1978.

The progression of the agency continued when John’s son, Malcolm Blane, joined the business in 1978, followed by Billy’s son, Wynn Radford, in 1979. In 1982 Malcolm and Wynn purchased the agency from their fathers, beginning a new era for Higgins Insurance. Over the next 3 decades, Higgins transformed from a small, local provider of primarily personal lines insurance to an agency known as a regional leader with national reach.

This beautiful 43,000 sq. ft. facility will leave you speechless. Your tour begins as you enter our welcome center that has a view of the three wings of the YMCA.

The YMCA is equipped with state-of-the-art circuit equipment, free weights and specialized cardio machines in our Cardio Room, Family Fitness Room and Free Weight Room, all separated to give you optimal space to call your own.

A YMCA member can benefit from the free orientation process given by the wellness staff. Members will learn to use and adjust each piece of equipment. The YMCA strives for each member to feel comfortable and confident on all exercise equipment.

Walk or run in peace while you enjoy the spectacular aerial view of the Wellness Center from our indoor track. Take a ride on the sleek Arc Trainers and treadmills, Elliptical and Stair Master pieces, or sit back on the upright and recumbent bikes.  Take advantage of urethane coated straight barbells and dumbbells that range from 3 lbs to 120 lbs.  This allows for greater progress and convenience. Free Weight Room

This room features heavy-duty equipment for a serious workout with no fluff. The weight room houses power racks, deadlift/power clean platform, flat benches, incline bench, leg press, hack squat, bars, and dumbbells up to 120 lbs. Many other pieces complete this hard core atmosphere.

Swimming Pool

The YMCA pool is a five lane pool with depths ranging from zero entry to 10 foot.   It is a family style pool that offers lap swim, children’s play area, splash features and a slid.  It is currently an outdoor pool only, open from Memorial Day through Labor Day.  The pool chemicals are monitored every two hours by staff.  The pool can be rented for open and after hours parties.

Gymnasium

This room is a double court Gym. It can be divided into two volleyball or four man basketball courts or can be played as a full five man basketball court. The four man basketball courts have adjustable rims for younger age groups to use with the supervision of our Program Director.  The gym also houses two Pickleball Courts.

Cross Training Room

The YMCA has everything from hoist motion cage which is our own adult jungle gym with rock climbing, squat rack, heavy bags, bounce back, etc.  The room also houses self-propelled treadmills, rowers, sled push and pulls, Jacobs Ladders, platforms for lifting and TRX equipment and classes.

Aerobic Studio

Our Aerobic Studio is both beautiful and functional with full length mirrors and a view to the river outside.  We offer over 40 Group Ex classes that rotate in style every 8 weeks as well as host our specialty fitness classes like Silver Sneakers, Rock Steady Boxing, Bootcamps and Line Dancing.

Nursery and Kids Corner

The Nursery and Kids Corner area are decorated in bright colors for the proven stimulation of young minds. The Nursery has play ovens, play workbenches, slides, children sized table and chairs and many, many toys. Kids Corners boosts a large indoor jungle gym complete with slides and climbing areas.  Our child care staff are tops in their area which brings peace of mind to mom or dad while they work out. The Nursery is designed for ages ranging from 6 weeks to 4 years and Kids Corner from 5 years to 9 years.  Rates are $2 per child per visit if they are not on a family membership.
